The Eyjafjallajoekull Volcano in Iceland and the Web

With the dramatic eruption of the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano in Iceland, there has been a lot of media coverage, not to mention thousands of travellers stranded around Europe and other parts of the globe.  What is interesting though is how social media is really coming into it’s own through events like this.  There is a lot of activity on both Twitter and Facebook both from ‘official’ sources such as airlines, as well as individuals tweeting their frustrations and hopes.

With long waiting times on phone lines, and some websites straining under the sheer load of users, social media has reason to the top as the best place to get information.  Airlines are able to push mass broadcast updates to followers along with air traffic control and other travel companies allow them to reach out to people with information.
